What Makes Great Teaching?

There are many things I'd like to say that make great teaching. Teachers play a major role in the lives of their students and sometimes they may forget that. Growing up I had different types of teachers that I took many lessons from, but not just school-wise but life-wise as well. Some inspired me, while others made me genuinely question if this whole school thing was for me. Luckily I kept going and as I got older, I found myself taking a lot more from them than I thought I ever would. My past teachers really helped pave a way for me into knowing what I want to be and knowing that I also had some I can still turn to for anything no matter how long it's been since I've last seen them. I was inspired by any of them and found characteristics from them that I think make great teaching. Providing an environment for students where they are excited to learn and also feel safe are the two main things I would say make great teaching. Throughout this course, I was able to learn so ...

How do we talk about issues that matter?

When we talk about issues that matter, we see the positive things that we are surrounded by along with the negative. It seems that we talk about these issues to bring awareness but also to see reactions. Many people go into speaking about issues that matter with different expectations whether that be teaching a lesson, making a change, bringing awareness to a topic, or simply just putting it out there. There are always different opinions on what issues are being talked about which can tend to lead to disagreements more than positive outcomes. Everybody has their own method of talking about issues and everybody also has their own way of choosing to take in those issues that are being talked about. It can sometimes be challenging to find that "in-between" space where the speaker and the listener can meet because it can go a completely different route. Some people will choose to be cautious while speaking about issues that matter, while others will simply say it how it is or ho...

How are Schools Integrated?

Today schools still have not earned the title of being integrated which may be surprising for some to know. Although it may seem like we have made a lot of progress from how things were back in the past, we've actually added more segregation and may not even realize it. In many school systems today, students are still being separated from other students based off of many reasons that are completely out of the student's control. We have schools that put students who may not know English in separate classes instead of having them with everyone else. We also have students who may have disabilities and are separated from the other students as well. When we separate these students from each other based off of things that may be out of their control, we're not making any progression but instead repeating the same cycle. We are taking away the opportunity of them learn together as a whole when we do this and we are showing them that because they may be different from others, they...

What Rights Should be Protected for Students and Teachers?

From reviewing the modules for this week’s lesson, I was able to learn more about the rights that students and teachers are allowed to have while in the classroom. School is a place of learning, but it is also a place where everybody should feel welcomed and safe. Freedom of speech and expression within the school is an important right that students should know they have. I feel as if sometimes students may feel like they don't have any right to speak their opinions or ask certain questions based off of the fear that they are not the teacher, but that is nowhere near true. Teachers have the right to have an open mind and be willing to listen and learn from students as well. Everybody is allowed to have a voice in the classroom. The classroom should be an environment where everyone feels safe, equal, heard, and comfortable. Students may be quick to forget that teachers are able to learn just as much from them as they are from their own teachers. Students also need to know they have ...

What are you willing to do to educate all children?

I want to set many examples for my students. Growing up, I was fortunate enough to have incredible teachers who set many impactful examples in my life that I still carry with me till this day and apply to my daily life. I think when it comes to teaching, it's important that we are not only showing students the lessons that they are "required" to learn about certain subjects, but also lessons that will benefit them for their future and guide them in a good direction. I want to build a connection with all of my students and allow them to feel comfortable in my classroom. I want them to see school as a place that is exciting and a safe space instead of seeing it as somewhere they are being forced to go to. I want to make sure when I am teaching them different types of lessons, that I am teaching them in a unique way that will help the information stay with them and will be lessons that they genuinely are curious about learning. Diversity is something huge we all see in ever...

How does Gender Affect the Teaching Profession?

The fights that women have put up to even get our teachers where they are now is mind blowing to think about, but state gender still does have a huge impact on the teaching profession today. We indeed have made a lot of progress, but still somehow receive the negative comments about women being in the teaching field. Teaching our students about the equality that should be shown throughout this whole experience is so important because they are our future generation and if we want to break the cycle of this injustice, not only is it going to start with us but also our future students.  Gender had a major impact on the education system back then as we had read in this weeks modules. Something that I stand by and hope to teach my students is that at the end of the day we are all equal. We are all just skin and bones. We are humans. It should not matter what differences you have because those difference are what make you your own person. Rather you are a boy or a girl it should not affe...

What is the Purpose of Schools?

The purpose of schools are to help students expand not only their knowledge but their minds. Throughout the years, our education system is constantly developing and this happens with the knowledge that teachers themselves are gaining from when they went to school. Schools are suppose to help students learn how to develop and learn the different ways of success and also teach them how to be prepared for their future. School is very beneficial for students and certain jobs they may want to apply to and this helps them pave a way to get to where they want to be. As years go by and we learn more throughout our lives from being taught in school, we get to figure out how to solve certain obstacles we may encounter in our lives and also have the benefits of being provided with many different opportunities such as scholarships, internships, career benefits, etc. Education plays a big role in everyone's life and can also be seen as the base to building your life into what you want it to be...
