What Rights Should be Protected for Students and Teachers?
From reviewing the modules for this week’s lesson, I was able to learn more about the rights that students and teachers are allowed to have while in the classroom. School is a place of learning, but it is also a place where everybody should feel welcomed and safe. Freedom of speech and expression within the school is an important right that students should know they have. I feel as if sometimes students may feel like they don't have any right to speak their opinions or ask certain questions based off of the fear that they are not the teacher, but that is nowhere near true. Teachers have the right to have an open mind and be willing to listen and learn from students as well. Everybody is allowed to have a voice in the classroom. The classroom should be an environment where everyone feels safe, equal, heard, and comfortable. Students may be quick to forget that teachers are able to learn just as much from them as they are from their own teachers. Students also need to know they have their rights to their own privacy, and no one should take advantage of that. If they come from different backgrounds with different beliefs, it is completely okay to speak about them. Teachers have their own rights as well and if they feel like they can bring more to the school itself, they should be able to feel comfortable speaking about their ideas and suggestions to higher authorities throughout their education system. We need to be reminded of these rights and make sure they are acknowledged because sometimes there are people who will take advantage of the fact that people may not know about their own rights.
Hi Day, I love your take about this weeks discussion and the focus on the student's rights! I think it's extremely important that our students are aware of their rights in the classroom and that their input is valued. Your point about teachers also learning from students stood out to me because it usually isn't thought of from that point of view, but it's a nice reminder as a future educator that we need to take time to really listen to our student's and their needs. I agree that teachers should feel comfortable enough to talk about their ideas with others, and should have confidence in their rights that their opinions are important. With this though, I feel as if a lot of educators tend to just avoid the confrontation overall because like myself, they are unaware of their rights and don't feel as if we are allowed to share our thoughts. Thanks for your insightful contribution!
ReplyDeleteHi Diaynara, I just first wanted to let you know that I really enjoyed your blog this week. One specific part of your blog that I wanted to high light was when you stated "School is a place of learning, but it is also a place where everybody should feel welcomed and safe", I think that this is so well stated is a great support to many statements behind students rights. Specifically their freedom of speech, when students feel like the are able to speak freely in a classroom it is more likely that they will be more comfortable, and more likely to succeed. I think that there are so many times where a teacher can encourage students input or ask for student participation where students are able to feel like they are able to voice their opinions.
ReplyDeleteThank you so much Ms. Redding! I couldn’t agree more with you. It’s so important that us as future educators are showing and setting these examples for them. They need to feel comfortable in the place they are learning and know that they have a voice too.
DeleteHi Diaynara,
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed reading your response for this weeks module question. I think all the points you touched on are 100% accurate. Both the students and teacher should feel safe in the classroom. I like that you express what this may look like: being heard, feeling equal, and comfortable. Without this how will our students get the real experience of being educated if they can't express their own views/opinions or ask about things they don't understand? It's important that there are set boundaries so that people are not disrespected, but that goes for everyone in the classroom and in the world. I also like that you bring up the importance of knowing your rights. Having this knowledge allows you to express yourself in the way you know is right, while also knowing where the limits stand. Not only can you practice it yourself, but you will be able to apply it on others when needed.
I appreciate your response so much Jazmin. I agree with what you said on making sure there are set boundaries to make sure no one feels disrespected. Knowing limits and boundaries is very important and helps allow the student and the teacher build that connection between each other and allows them to feel safe with the environment they are in.
DeleteHi Diaynara!
ReplyDeleteI think you did a great job of answering this question for the module this week. Everyone should absolutely feel safe and welcome at school, and the fact that some students do not have this right is ridiculous. I think that students should have the right to talk about their opinions, even if those are on touchy subjects, and we should praise the individuality between students instead of trying to shove them into a "one size fits all" mold. Teachers should also be able to experience this, and be able to talk about the hard stuff, so students can learn from it. We definitely need to make sure that our educators and students have these rights.
Hi Jadyn! Thank you so much for your feedback. Students do deserve the right to speak about their opinions just as much as anyone else does. I love the “one size fits all mold” example you used. It is so easy for people to feel as if they are thrown in to this category and it’s not fair. Everyone has a voice.
DeleteHi Diaynara,
ReplyDeleteI completely agree with what you said about students having the right to have privacy. Students personal information should always be kept confidential and no other people should know anything about a students personal life other than the teacher if necessary. I also agree with what you said about students having a voice in the classroom. The classroom should most definitely be a place that students feel comfortable to share their thoughts, feelings, and opinions! It is our job as teachers to make sure that our students feel comfortable at all times at school. Teachers should also be able to talk about touchy subjects because it is their right to speak about whatever they believe in. Teachers are usually told what they can and cannot talk about in the classroom and this is unfair! Everyone should be able to have the freedom of speech that they deserve, no matter what environment they are in. Overall, you did an amazing job on this blog post!
Hi Madison, thank you so much. Students do indeed deserve that right to their privacy and should not feel as if they are forced to share anything that they may not feel comfortable sharing. I also do agree that talking about touchy subjects should be allowed. When we learn how to be more open to these kinds of conversations, it sparks up a different environment and will allow everyone to feel comfortable knowing they can speak about what they want to and that they have the right to.
DeleteHey Diaynara, I think your answer to the question was worded beautifully and I agree with your points wholeheartedly. Students should be feeling safe in the classroom setting, this is the number one priority. We need to do our part to make sure we fulfill the needs of that is necessary to help these students with recognizing their rights and instilling said justices to the classroom setting. Kids should be able to express themselves as they see fit, and this may look different for everyone, and that is okay. Teacher rights are just as important as well, because if they aren't able to be comfortable and express themselves, how will they expect their students to? Teachers need to feel safe and secure too in order to establish a healthy classroom environment that enables growth and goals for the future. Being able to voice opinions and thoughts without judgement to contribute to discussions as a classroom is beneficial for both teacher and student will not only create a bond, but it will increase participation as well.
ReplyDeleteThank you so much Morgan! I completely agree with you. It’s important that both ends are aware of their rights and are able to express themselves in ways they feel comfortable with. It really will help benefit both parties and help with the participation skills of the students. You made amazing points.
